Analysis: Retro Console Mini 620 in 1 with NES games

Nintendo put on sale in November 2016 a special edition of the NES, the first great console of the company launched in 1983 in Japan. However, its almost total absence of stock during the time it was for sale (although now going to do it again) led many users to opt for alternatives such as making their own NES Mini with a Raspberry Pi 3, or Buy copies in Chinese web pages. Today, we analyze one of those copies. Will it be up to it?

This console has been provided by Gearbest, and can now be purchased for only 17 euros.

Unboxing and external analysis
The design of the box reminds us a bit of the original NES Mini, highlighting in the drawings the console and the amount of games included. In the back we find the complete list of games that includes as they appear in the menu when we turn it on, and there you can see that many are repeated.

When opening the box we find the console, the two controls, the AV cable (with 2.5 mm jack), the power cable (remember to ask for it to come with a European adapter), and the user manual. The appearance of the console is very similar to that of the NES Mini, although we see subtle differences, such as the control connectors are placed horizontally, in addition to being changed side connectors, buttons and ornaments with respect to the NES Mini (as if they had put the mirror mode)

Gearbest offers few technical details about this console, although there is not much to know. It includes 620 classic NES games, although the list is messy and soon after we notice we will realize that all the titles are repeated. To know which chip is inside, we had to dismantle it, and there we can see that it uses an M36L0T7050T3ZAQ chip manufactured by STMicroelectronics. Its main technical aspects can be seen on this website, but roughly we find 128 MB of flash memory and 32 MB of SRAM.

For current uses a micro USB DC port of 5V 500 mA, so we can use a mobile charger or even an external battery to use the console. The video output is AV, so we will be limited to analog signal up to 576i. This really is not a big problem, because the image quality is good enough to play, although not without a small inconvenience that we will discuss later.
The cable length of the two controls included is 1.5 meters, and the weight of the console is 145 grams, with measures of 135 x 105 x 45 mm.

Test and internal analysis

After connecting it to the current and the screen, we press the power button, and the list of games to choose and start playing automatically appears on the screen, along with a music that immerses us in the retro world. We can go down one by one between the list of games, or use the right and left dates to jump from page to page, in addition to being able to jump in reverse from 1. to 620.

The image quality of the menu is good, but as soon as we get to the games the illusion vanishes. While the resolution is acceptable, the color is not reliable, and in some games they show incorrect tones. In Super Mario Bros. we can find a clear example of this, with the background looking pink instead of blue. In other games, luckily, I have not noticed this inaccuracy.

The games work in a fluid way and respond very well to the buttons, without there being an input lag that makes us inaccurate; and with a fairly fluid movement. However, we do not have the option to save the game, and we can not do anything like speed up the game or make quick save and save points like in any other emulator that appreciates. We can only pause the game.

In the case that we want to change the game, we can not do it with the command, having to get up and go to the console and hit the reset button to load the initial menu again. In addition, we depend on the length of the cables, so we will have to have the console always in the middle (although this is more "retro" if we see the positive side).

I have taken the liberty of taking the list of games (available on the Gearbest website), and order it alphabetically in Excel. There we can see that each game is repeated at least once, so we actually have 310 games. It is curious that there are even unofficial games for the console, as is the case of Angry Bird, a version adapted to NES of the popular mobile game that circulates in China.

Beyond that, we find some of the best console games, like Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Megaman or Contra. However, many others are missing, such as The Legend of Zelda or Kirby. In addition, it is difficult to identify many games because they use changed names to avoid legal problems. Finally, we can not load ROMs from other games.

In short, this console is a great option to give to young children who want to get started in video games, being a very affordable gift and that will make a lot of enthusiasm. The most enthusiastic, however, will find a console full of limitations, without being able to save games, with list of games messy, and wanting to play many other classic titles of the console.
